Ferrophosphorus Testing Laboratory

Ferrophosphorus

Ferrophosphorus is an iron-phosphorus alloy. This alloy’s composition can range anywhere from 20% to 26% phosphorus. Ferrophosphorus is a byproduct of phosphorus production. Phosphorus is created by melting phosphate ore, carbon and silica in an electric furnace. The element is then recovered by condensation of its vapor. Iron is created when carbon reduces the iron compounds inside the furnace, which combine with the phosphorus to create ferrophosphorus.

Ferrophosphorus is a valuable additive and alloying agent for high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels. When added to these steels, ferrophosphorus removes the water content from nitric acid, prevents oxidation and increases corrosion resistance. Foundries use ferrophosphorus in varying amounts to create desired steel properties.

Ferrophosphorus Analysis

McCreath Laboratories offers material verification services with our ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited testing laboratory. Our specialized team conducts various chemical and physical tests to assess material composition and verify ferrophosphorus samples. We are certified to perform testing methods such as:

  • X-ray spectrophotometry
  • Combustion analysis
  • Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP)

Our modern instrumentation allows us to conduct precision tests while applying industry quality control standards. McCreath conducts all testing processes in our facility to maintain our precision standards for all processes.

We provide sampling services to support accuracy in our laboratory testing. When sampling a material stockpile, the sample must be taken so that it accurately represents the whole supply. When sampling processes are imprecise, test results are skewed. McCreath uses a defined system for sampling materials to obtain a representative sample for testing.

Our laboratory is one of the few providers with a mobile sampling vehicle. We travel to your site and have access to all necessary tools for industry-best sampling techniques.

Material handling requires more than sampling and laboratory testing, and McCreath offers support in these areas. With material inspections, we confirm the weight and density of materials to verify your purchase. Through our consulting services, we provide various recommendations for material-handling processes to create consistency and reduce risk.
